Canstruction Underway

The Richmond office of Draper Aden Associates is making its first entry into the creative competition among architects, engineers, and contractors to benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank. Plans are underway for the creation of a sculpture made completely out of canned goods that depicts the theme “A Time to Play.”

Canstruction, Inc. is a not-for-profit foundation that provides a unique way to help feed hungry people via its numerous nationwide competitions. Using only cans of food as their medium, hundreds of competing teams showcase their talents by designing and building giant sculptures. At present, Canstruction events are held in 45 cities across North America and these competitions result in raising more than one million pounds of canned food each year. These competitions demonstrate that, through imagination and creativity, everyone can contribute toward solving the issue of hunger in our society.

This is the tenth year for the competition in Richmond. The “build day” is November 4, 2006, with all entries displayed in the James Center lobby in downtown Richmond. After a week of display, all canned goods are donated to the Food Bank. Team Captain for Draper Aden Associates is Denise Carew.

Examples of canned good sculptures can be viewed at www.canstruction.org.

Draper Aden Associates Holds 2nd Annual Client Golf Outing and Fundraiser

Meals on Wheels CheckThe 2nd Annual Client Golf Outing and Fundraiser was held at the new Poplar Hill Golf Club in Farmville on September 14, 2006. Poplar Hill is the newest premier golf course in that part of the state and Draper Aden Associates provided engineering services to the developers of the Club.

The purpose of the event was two-fold: we wanted to provide a relaxing day of golf to our clients and we wanted to raise funds for the Farmville Area Meals on Wheels program. We were overwhelmingly successful in both efforts!

We had approximately 75 guests attend the event including local government representatives from across the state; representatives from many of the vendors with whom we work and who helped sponsor the event; professionals from engineering and architectural firms with whom we team; and representatives from major contracting companies. We observed that our guests enjoyed themselves, enjoyed the friendly competition, and were generous in purchasing raffle and mulligan tickets to support Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels CheckThe fundraiser for Meals on Wheels exceeded our expectations. We hoped to raise $5,000 for Meals on Wheels – but we were able to write a check for $6,615 dollars! The Farmville Area Meals on Wheels is a small organization that provides meals to elderly, handicapped or otherwise homebound people in the Farmville area. They serve approximately 450 meals per week. Our contribution equates to meals for three weeks! As stated by Reese Gill, the Assistant Director of Meals on Wheels, “Your generosity in contributing this money will touch the lives of many, many people.”

The 2006 Golf Committee included: Fred Pribble, Lee White, Lance Koth, Jeff Tyler, Susan Strong, Diane Grosz and Sheryl Stephens.
