Draper Aden provided comprehensive surveying and site engineering for the award winning Walter L. Rice Education Building located within the Inger and Walter Rice Center for Environmental Life Sciences. Services included wetlands, environmental impact study and geotechnical engineering, two wells for aquifer testing, well site approval, all permitting, bidding and drilling, as well as all source water and sewage disposal activities. The approximately 6,000 square-foot building is flexible in design and is used for hands-on environmental sciences education.

The permitting process was challenging due to the innovative sustainable features that were new to the review agencies, including the rainwater reuse system and thte integrated stormwater management system. Additional work at the Rice Center has included the design for a new boathouse and pier.

The building received Platinum LEED Certification, the highest certification level and the first building in Virginia to do so. It has been selected as the regional 2009 Overall Project of the Year by Mid-Atlantic Construction magazine as well as the publication's choice for "green Project" of the year.
