Client: Roanoke Valley Resource Authority

Location:
Roanoke County, Virginia

Services:
Design, landfill gas monitoring

The project included design and installation of a perimeter gas monitoring system followed by routine gas monitoring at the recently closed Rutrough Road Landfill. Monitoring of facility probes resulted in detection of gas migration at the facility property boundary, in excess of state standards. Installation of an active gas extraction system was designed and installed by another company to correct the problem. The extraction system proved to be ineffective, and the Authority retained Draper Aden Associates to evaluate the system and modify its design. A sensitivity analysis of the system and suggested design improvements were implemented. The extraction system was installed and assessment of its effectiveness is ongoing. Draper Aden Associates conducts monthly monitoring and adjustment of the active gas extraction system. Draper Aden Associates also upgraded the equipment on the blower flare station at the landfill by replacing the original auto dialer, data logger and by installing a level sensing and alarm system in the adjacent leachate storage tank.
