Brownfields Funding Assistance

-Brownfields are defined as real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.  It is estimated that there are more than 450,000 brownfields in the U.S.  Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties serves to:

  • Increase local tax bases
  • Facilitate job growth
  • Utilize existing infrastructure
  • Take development pressures off undeveloped, open land
  • Improve and protect the environment

We provide assistance to local governments and developers in:

  • determining the impact of brownfields on their communities,
  • the potential for productive reuse of these properties,
  • and practical ways to assess and address these impacts.

Brownfields properties are opportunities to rehabilitate existing sites into productive use.  However, there are  challenges that make cleanup and redevelopment unique compared to other real estate development projects and special resources are needed access these opportunities.

We have experience with the brownfields funding program of both the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). We can:

  • assist with preparation of grant proposals
  • and provide funding guidance.

EPA Brownfields Program provides grants that continue to serve as the foundation of revitalization efforts by funding environmental assessment, cleanup, and job training activities.  Virginia DEQ Brownfield/Land Renewal Program also facilitates brownfield redevelopment projects to help level the playing field between brownfield and greenfield sites.  DEQ’s program assists communities and businesses through financial and technical assistance, liability protection, and reasonable cleanup objectives.
