St. Gertrude High School Outdoor Athletics Center

The original concept included a track and field stadium, athletic training facility, and parking to serve the undeveloped property. However, SGHS wanted to explore additional opportunities for use including field and playing surfaces their athletics programs desperately needed. In a collaborative effort between SGHS and Draper Aden Associates, the re-envisioned concept and subsequent design included an artificial turf field, a multi-purpose natural turf field, a softball field, six tennis courts, an athletic training facility, concessions, an events pavilion, and an interpretive walking trail throughout the Outdoor Athletics Center. Our specific scope of services for this project included grading, drainage, utility design (for water, fire, and sewer), environmental impact reporting, erosion and sediment control, and construction phase services. The site design portion of this project was fast-tracked and involved a site demolition/design plans. The constructed building contains an auditorium, a lecture hall, nine classrooms, and serves as office space for the School of Social Work and the Department of English. The project consists of installation of a 115 kV Cross-linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cable system by means of a concrete encased duct bank for an underground transmission line which is approximately 2.3 miles long and will terminate at new structures in the Wilkens Avenue Substation and the existing Westport Substation. Formally known as Amazon Solar Farm US East, this project will be the first of its kind in Virginia and will be the largest solar facility in the Mid-Atlantic. Located on the Delmarva Peninsula in Accomack County, the nearly 1,000 acre solar farm will use 250,000 solar panels and generate enough electricity to power about 15,000 homes in a year. This solar project was the first approved under Virginia's permit by rule process for renewable energy projects under 100 megawatts. The design completely replaced the existing building systems, added a 27,000 square foot building extension, related infrastructure and landscape improvements in Capitol Square. The project was designed to meet current programming needs, addressed the 2007 statewide celebration plans, and extended the useful life of the historic Virginia State Capitol. Draper Aden Associates assembled complete base mapping for the Capitol Square, including some subsurface utility verification and supplemental ground surveys. Initially, Draper Aden Associates was brought into the RKYSC project to help refine the scope and budget through Value Engineering. These Value Engineering efforts resulted in innovative site modifications to address environmental concerns, materials selection, and renegotiated construction contracts. Our geotechnical engineers helped to mitigate unsuitable fill material to create a balanced site, which eliminated the cost of transporting excess dirt. Additionally, during construction, our field technicians provided Quality Control for the installation of both synthetic turf and sodded athletic fields.
